Understanding your results
Sleep tests measure how often your breathing stops or becomes shallow each hour. This is reported as the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). In adults, sleep apnea severity is generally described as:
| AHI (events per hour) | Severity | Typical options |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | Normal | Snoring treatment if needed |
| 5 to 14 | Mild | Oral appliance therapy, lifestyle changes |
| 15 to 29 | Moderate | Oral appliance therapy or CPAP |
| 30 or more | Severe | CPAP is usually recommended. Some patients use an oral appliance together with CPAP |
Dr. Lester reviews your results with you and recommends the treatment that fits your diagnosis, your health and your lifestyle. If an oral appliance is not the right choice, she will tell you and help coordinate care with your physician.
What happens next
Once your sleep apnea is confirmed and an oral appliance is the right choice, the rest of the process is simple.
